Remember a few years back when renting movies through a combination of the Internet and the mail service was so hot? Actually, it still is but the point is that this type of movie rental is both handy and economical yet achieves a very in demand service. Well, the renting of designer handbags is such a service also. It works pretty much the same way as the online movie rental business. One usually becomes a member of a web based rental company and pays a yearly membership fee. In return for joining, the member may rent the handbag of their choice for a pre-set fee. Where one company may allow several items to be rented or, as they call it, "checked out" at once, others only allow one item at a time. It is certainly understandable that a company would want to control the amount of time for a $700 Chanel, rather than allowing it to be used indefinitely.

Some company memberships are priced very reasonable. Of course, reasonable is a relative term but in the general sense of the word, the membership fees between $5 USD and $20 USD per month are considered "reasonable" range. The ranges vary according to the specific quality and line of purse that is desired for rental. For instance, one site publishes the following rental fees (in addition to the membership fee) for the following categories of purses:

So, is it an advantage to rent a purse rather than buying it? It would depend on several factors. First, some people do not like to carry around the same old bag or bags all the time. A rental service would certainly be advantageous to these types. Secondly, the worry of having to find a different bag for different occasions without the need to store the bag(s) is another reason why renting may be more to the liking of some.

Though the price-per-use is less than the actual purchase price of designer purses, if one takes advantage of the continuous movement of purses while using the rent-a-purse method, the long-term fees certainly can add up to a yearly price of several of the actual purchase prices. It is a matter of opinion and again, what the bank account will stand.
