A weather balloon is a scientific instrument which is used to recover data about atmospheric climate conditions. The term "sounding balloon" is often used by some scientists because these balloons really do take what are known as "soundings" of the upper atmosphere. This data is used in weather prediction, and to track common weather movements. Numerous organisations all over the world launch weather balloons on a daily basis, and they generally share the information collected, in the interest of scientific assistance.
A basic weather balloon will collect specifics about the ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, and humidity. The data that the balloon gathers is typically collected during the balloon's ascent to it's final altitude and then again, frequently, as it hovers. The collected data is sent back to various gathering stations on Earth with the help of transponders. A weather balloon may also be used to collect specifics about wind speed and patterns, by transmitting its geographic location back to Earth.
The data gathering instruments are in a pack that is known as the "radiosonde." The earliest radiosondes appeared in the 1930s in Russia, and other nations promptly adopted the concept as well. Generally, a radiosonde is made for quite a few uses, and it will be reclaimed after it returns to Earth. Now and then the instrument parcels are damaged or lost, but the data they obtained in flight has already been sent back to Earth. Radiosondes may also be dropped from aircraft, sometimes, instead of being floated up on a weather balloon.
